Introductory summary
In 2007 Mr. Edward C. Tang created this scholarship to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Asian and Pacific Islander (API) students pursuing post‑secondary education. The award aims to help LGBT youth pursue their educational goals with pride and without stigma. Each year up to four exceptional applicants may receive scholarships from this fund. In total, awards may amount to as much as $100,000 and can be distributed over a period of up to four years. Scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years (four years total) provided recipients satisfy the annual renewal criteria.

Eligibility requirements
Applicants must satisfy every item below:
- Self‑identify as Asian/Pacific Islander and as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, with at least 25% API ancestry, and be active in the GLBT community.
- Be a graduate of a high school located in one of the nine Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Napa, Sonoma, or Solano.
- Be applying for full‑time enrollment (minimum 12 units per semester/quarter) at an accredited institution — this includes two‑ or four‑year colleges or universities, community colleges, vocational schools, or graduate programs.
- Be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Show academic promise.
- Have an unweighted cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all schools attended.
- Be between 17 and 25 years of age at the time of application.

How to get the 2026 application
Download the 2026 application (PDF) from the program website. The form is a fillable PDF that requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to complete electronically; opening it inside a web browser will prevent fillable fields from working. You may type your responses into the PDF, then print the completed form and sign it.

Application materials and submission rules
Your scholarship packet must include the completed application plus all required supporting documents, received by the scholarship manager by the published deadline. Required supporting materials include, but are not limited to: a personal statement, letters of reference, official transcripts, proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful residency, and documentation demonstrating financial need. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered. Applications submitted by postmark date, fax, or email will not be accepted.
